On Saturday September 20th 2025 COMAT sponsored a competition team to travel to the Southern Ohio Fall Games (SOFG) just outside Cincinnati, OH. As a special event, COMAT was invited to hold the opening demonstration which was coordinated by COMAT’s own Head Captain Candie Vazquez. The display of forms, basic techniques and cutting was roundly appreciated by the crowd and included COMAT members from all levels from color belt to 7th Dan Master. COMAT members took home several medals and trophies in Creative Forms, Weapons Forms and Board Breaking events. Of particular note is that COMAT members Duncan L., Chad B., and Mike A. swept the men’s high black-belts weapon forms and provided a definitive example of competitive sword forms to please the crowd and judges. Participating in the SOFG was very valuable for all COMAT members since it allows them to experience a regional tournament that is always one of the best coordinated and run events we have had the pleasure of attending and supporting.
COMAT was pleased to send a very sizable contingent to the 2025 Tempered Minds Sword Seminar. Haidong Gumdo Chief Masters Eric Jenko and Laura Clements collaborated with HEMA (Historical European Martial Arts) Instructor Hobbs to continue to bring this excellent event to the East Coast and make it very accessible to COMAT members interested in improving their Gumdo Techniques and expanding their knowledge of traditional sword arts. 2025 Focused on seminars and workshops surrounding three main themes including Competitive Cutting (Bamboo, Paper and Fruit), One Handed sword form fundamentals, and Master Susan Shirk from the Twin Cities held a special workshop on the development of Creative Gum Bup (sword forms) and Competitive Sword Dance. COMAT was able to assist a total of 9 local members including Instructors and Assistants as well as local Black Belt and Color Belts students with the fees and paperwork associated with attendance and helped coordinate travel and lodging for all involved, helping make it memorable and successful for all the interested members.
"Tempered Minds was an excellent chance to train with great people, learn from skilled Masters, and get in some solid bamboo cutting practice. The energy and camaraderie made it a memorable experience." - Mike, HG black belt
It’s been 8 years since Grandmaster Kang Jun, founder of the mixed-martial art Gongkwon Yusul, has held a World Seminar outside of South Korea. Several founding members of COMAT were able to attend previous seminar in Munster Germany (home of the European GKYS HQ) and we were excited to try and bring as many members of the GKYS COMAT team as possible to the 2025 edition of the Grandmaster’s World Seminar. This seminar was held in the sleepy German village of Coesfeld which is home to an absolute beast of a GKYS school, the Kampfkunstschule Coesfeld. With the assistance of COMAT and funded by member activities and generous donors COMAT was able to provide significant assistance to COMAT’s GKYS team and as a result we were able to send the full range of team members including a regional director, instructors, black belts and color belts for this fantastic martial arts training and education opportunity.
“With COMAT I was able to have an affordable trip to Germany, where I was able to train directly under Grandmaster Kang and Master Yun in Gongkwon Yusul. Although there were language barriers, I was able to understand and learn some of the finer points of Gongkwon, and it was an excellent, if exhausting, leaning experience.” - Patrick, GKYS black belt and instructor
“I received a COMAT stipend to travel with other Central Ohio Martial Arts students to Germany for a Gongkwon Yusul seminar held by the grandmaster. Knowing that I wasn't draining most of my savings to do it made it far easier to enjoy the trip and get the most from the seminar. It was a rare and delightful experience to train alongside students from across Europe under the instruction of the founder of the art, and I'm very grateful to have had the opportunity.” - Halene, GKYS color belt
In order to drive development of Martial Arts in Central Ohio, COMAT has assisted several members in obtaining advanced belt ranks and certifications.
